We don't believe the Gospel. Most days we lean into legalism: when we're good, God will bless us and when we fail, God will afflict us. Jesus at Matthew's dinner party is critical to understand who Jesus is - and who He enjoys hanging out with!

The only way we can live these new lives in Christ is to walk in the Spirit (Gal.5:16). To use our August Training Camp analogy: the only way to play the game, the only way to still be standing at the end of the 4th quarter is "to walk in the power of the Spirit".

"Such great faith!" Jesus was amazed by the Centurion's faith. What was it about his actions and words that evoked such a comment from Jesus? Jesus said He had not found such faith in all Israel - maybe we should retool some of our definitions of faith based on the Centurion.

The ministry of Barnabas Aid is to send financial support to projects which help Christians where they suffer discrimination, oppression and persecution as a consequence of their faith. The projects aim to strengthen Christian individuals, churches and their communities by providing material and spiritual support in response to needs identified by local Christian leaders.

Even though Paul's 'departure' is at hand, he solemnly charges Timothy to pick up the torch and run the race. Even though people with itchy ears will wander away from sound teaching, nevertheless - preach the Word!

Pentecost marked the birth of the Church. The Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples, who were in Jerusalem, and the Gospel was preached to people from around the known world. Today, we rely on the Holy Spirit to continue the ministry of the Gospel through us as we bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to our "Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth.

Selfish choices and preoccupations isolate us as captives unable to receive God’s grace. Jesus calls us to give up the worthless trinkets of our self-centeredness and receive his gift of life lived truly large. Nothing, even the worst choices in lives gone terribly wrong, can separate God’s children from his love for them in Christ Jesus.

Timothy's sincere faith was intentionally transmitted to him by his mother and his grandmother. And by Paul. "Continue" Paul says, "because you know those from whom you learned this."

At the heart of 2 Tim. 3 is Paul's exhortation to "continue in what Timothy has learned and become convinced of." There are "terrible times" in these last days. 'False teachers' abound and "everyone in the province of Asia has deserted Paul." What should Timothy do in the face of all this? In one word: "Continue!'

The problem with church buildings is that they can give Jesus and His mission a local address and thereby eclipse the theology of the priesthood of every believer: that God is powerfully at work IN us and WITH us all week long right where we are.

The Joseph Story is one of the best places to look for an answer to our questions about the sense of the absence of God more than of His presence in our lives. Where was God? A. "The LORD was with Joseph."  How so? To bring blessing through Joseph to others. This is the startling climax of the Book of Genesis!

It seems like such a "Dah!" comment for Paul to tell Timothy, his 'main man' to "remember Jesus" (2 Tim.2:8). Timothy is an evangelist for crying out loud!. What's up with that? What's up is that nothing is more urgent than to preach the Gospel to ourselves every single day. So, "remember Jesus Christ"... today, especially if it's 'simply Tuesday'!

The Gospel has come to you and I because faithful others didn't just receive the Gospel, but were entrusted with passing it on. There is a living chain that has stretched for 2,000 years from Paul, to Timothy, to faithful men, who in turn entrusted it to still others. Where are you a link in that chain?

Even gifted leaders like Timothy (like Peter!) need encouragement to stand unashamed of the testimony about Jesus. When we adjust the Gospel to the expectations of our culture, we muzzle its power to gain respectability before men. To be unashamed is the best way to "guard the Gospel."

In this introduction to the 2nd letter to Timothy, we hear Paul remind and exhort his first lieutenant to not settle for lukewarm in the application of his gifts and energies to advancing the gospel. A good reminder for all of us!

It is the Gospel of Jesus. It is the Gospel of the Kingdom. When we reduce our message to 'how to get saved', we are no longer preaching the Gospel that Jesus and His apostles preached.

The CROSS is the fulfillment of Isa. 53 "the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all." Substitutionary Atonement means He was crucified in my place. And therefore, it also means that in Christ, I too have been crucified.

Jesus draws near when we are walking away from the Cross and explains from Scripture why His suffering and death were necessary and how He is the fulfillment of Israel's long, long story.
